Seascape ‘The Harbour at Marseilles’, one of the masterpieces of neo-impressionism in the Hermitage collection, was painted by Paul Signac after his trip to Marseilles in 1906. Signac uses pointillism, the technique of painting in which small dots of pure colour turn into a decorative mosaic. Dots of blue, purple, yellow and green are arranged into an elaborate pattern creating the impression of glimmering light overflowing the harbor. The small kerchief renders beautifully all the nuances of the famous canvas.
