Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty and love, one of the 12 Olympians. According to Hesiod's Theogony, she had sprung from ocean foam near Cythera and then was brought by the wind to Cyprus. A legend has it that Zeus was refused by her and for her obstinacy gave her in marriage to his ugly and lame son Hephaestus, who was the famous blacksmith and the god of fire. According to another version, she married the god of war Ares. Homer thought that it was she who had caused the Trojan War. In the contest of 3 goddesses for the golden apple marked "For the Fairest", Paris gave the prize to Aphrodite as she had promised him the love of the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen. Her husband, the king of Sparta Menelaus, went to Troy with the Greek army to demand the return of Helen. The bust was made by Petersburg casters after the famous sculptural works from the Hermitage collection.
