A magnificently detailed plaster adaptation from a medallion commemorating the victory of the Russian Army in the War of 1812. The original (1817-1819) was part of a series of twenty allegorical medallions created by the Russian medal-maker and sculptor Fyodor Tolstoy (1783-1873). In the centre of the composition is a Russian warrior arrayed in Slavic armor. He is leaning on the fasces lictoriae, symbolizing power and authority, and holding a sword in his right hand, with a victoriously raised shield in his left. The shield itself depicts an eagle, representing the Russian Empire.
