Matryoshka is a symbol of national decorative art and a very popular souvenir. But it is not widely known that this pretty wooden doll, the very image of traditional Russian style and character, appeared only in the late 19th century. The first nesting dolls were made in the workshops of the Mamontovs, the famous Russian manufacturers and art patrons. The birthplace of Matryoshka is Sergiyev Posad, an important centre of handicraft industry. The world was charmed by a Russian national doll in 1900, when it was first shown at the Exposition Universelle in Paris. Not once during its long life Matryoshka has changed her appearance. Dolls painted in traditional style – with flowers and ancient ornaments – were supplanted by those with the faces of Old Russian boyars or warriors, legendary and historical figures.
