Apart from catalogues, the State Hermitage publishes the series of encyclopedias devoted to various kinds and genres of art. There is one important limitation: every work of art should be produced in Saint Petersburg. The period of three hundred years can be easily singled out because artistic life in the capital of the Russian Empire, later also called ‘the cultural capital’, has always been significantly different from the processes going on in the rest of the country. This encyclopedia is conveniently divided into several sections. The Hermitage collection provides brilliant examples for each entry and all of them carry a most detailed information. Subject and name indexes are also given. The authors of this volume are leading academic associates, curators M.Lopato, I.Ukhanova, I.Bagdasarova, Ye.Shchukina.
