Cunning and mischievous, Cupid is the son of Venus, goddess of beauty and love. He inflicts suffering on lowly mortals and Olympian gods with his naughty pranks. No one can hide from his darts, and artists from all periods of history have succumbed to the temptation of trying to depict this curly-haired trickster. This charming Cupid by the wonderful French sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet was made as decoration for a boudoir in the Paris mansion of the scandalously infamous Marquise de Pompadour. The diminutive god of love is depicted seated on a cloud. He has a cheeky smile on his face as he reaches for an arrow from his quiver. This statue enjoyed immense success when exhibited, and attracted a great deal of attention from collectors, resulting in many copies of the figurine being made. This skillful replica, made by craftsmen at the Hermitage, conveys the levity and delicacy of the original museum masterpiece.
