Jewish Treasures of St Petersburg

This original gift edition with dust jacket and slip case examines Jewish cultural artefacts from St Petersburg collections. The book is in two volumes, the first of which is dedicated to collections of Jewish manuscripts in the city, including such rarities as the oldest dated manuscript of biblical texts; the most complete listing of essays by mediaeval theologians, philosophers, linguists, exegetes; ancient manuscripts and many other unique masterpieces from the literary world.
The second volume introduces the reader to the Jewish (Ashkenazi) collection in the Russian Ethnographic Museum which illustrates the Jewish culture from the Eastern European Diaspora in the 18th - early 20th centuries. Splendid examples of religious artefacts, items used during religious ceremonies or for protecting the scrolls of the Torah demonstrate the many facets of the Jewish artistic tradition and throw light on the everyday life of the Jewish people.
This book gives detailed descriptions of the collections of Jewish cultural artefacts held in the Russian Ethnographic Museum and is a fine example of the tradition round the world of publishing museum collections.
