Abraham Mignon (1640–1679) painted still life compositions with flowers and fruit in the tradition of the Dutch old masters. In conformity with the genre, this painting contains a symbolic message: the picture reminded the viewer of the transience of life. The wilting buds nestling among the fully blown roses hinted towards the passage of time, along with the poppy (symbol of sleep) and ears of wheat (symbol of eternal life). The painting has been executed with distinctive precision and drive for ornamentality: the flowers fill the canvas like a fabulous bright pattern.
