Medaillon "National Militia, 1812". By Fyodor Tolstoy
Medaillon "National Militia, 1812". By Fyodor Tolstoy

A magnificently detailed plaster adaptation from a medallion commemorating the victory of the Russian Army in the War of 1812. The original (1817-1819) was part of a series of twenty allegorical medallions created by the Russian medal-maker and sculptor Fyodor Tolstoy (1783-1873). Working in the allegorical spirit, using the Classicist traditions and methods, the artist depicted here the moment when the nation’s warriors took their oath of allegiance on their weapons before entering into battle. The national militia was one of the decisive forces leading to the victorious outcome of the Patriotic War of 1812. Ordinary peasants and partisans came out with their bear-spears to beat the French who had encroached on Russian soil.
