Correggio: Danae. From the Borghese Gallery in Rome

A legend has it that Correggio, an outstanding master of the Renaissance, did not learn to paint, but having seen once the picture "St Cecilia" by Raphael, he exclaimed: "And I too am a painter!" Nobody knows whether it is true, but the artist’s works bear the impress of genius, while the delicacy and charm of his brushwork are inimitable. His "Danae" is a hymn to the female beauty and gracefulness. It seems that the painter had ascended the heaven in order to see the divine light that he had managed to convey in this world-known masterpiece.
